Iridient x transformer settings8/17/2023 ![]() ![]() If you have super important image and want want to get it just right then sure try a few different settings, but X-Transformer is really not meant to be used this way for each individual image. Don't feel like you have to go back and forth editing settings in X-Transformer for every image. Most people will pick a "general" or mild/conservative setting for these options that basically suits their end style goals roughly and then they add more sharpening and/or noise reduction later on in post processing to fine tune the final result. Just as most people don't try to adjust the camera sharpness and noise reduction for every single JPEG they take in-camera I don't recommend frequently editing settings in X-Transformer. For best final results you'll typically want to fine tune the image visually for both sharpening and noise reduction in Lightroom or other programs or plug-ins just as you would for color, exposure, white balance and so on. Same goes for X-Transformer's noise reduction. "Strong" sharpening in X-Transformer for example is no where close to the maximum sharpening level you could apply in Lightroom or other RAW processors. The optional processing in X-Transformer is fairly mild and meant to be at "capture" stage level. Most RAW processors have some automatic noise reduction (and often some sharpening too) that is automatic and not under user control and is just always applied during the early RAW processing stage. Far more noisy than the RAF would be processed through Lightroom. Indeed if you completely disable all noise reduction the DNGs at high ISO especially will be extremely noisy. I understand that and I have always offered a lot of control over adjustments in Iridient software including the ability to completely disable processing stages, but I do feel that turning off everything isn't the best place to start for most people.Ī common X-Transformer complaint I get is from users who completely disable all noise reduction and then find the results to be terribly noisy. Some may have their personal favorite sharpening application or noise reduction plug-in and just want to stick with what fits their own style or workflow. X-Transformer was designed to fit well into such a multi sharpening workflow and X-Transformer sharpening would specifically serve in the "capture" role. For example a 3 step (or 3 stage/level) sharpening workflow is a common recommendation for great photo sharpening results, with the stages being capture, creative and output. Just because you use sharpening or noise reduction in X-Transformer does not mean you should not or cannot use such processing later on. The Iridient RAW sharpening algorithms in particular have been very highly praised over the years and I feel some sharpening at the RAW stage is nearly always beneficial to the final result. I have had discussions in the past with Erik regarding sharpening/NR options and failed to convince him otherwise, but if I felt these additional processing stages did not add some value to the application I would have just left them out. I personally disagree and feel these options can lead to better end results with less editing work for most people. For example Erik B often recommends turing off all X-Transformer sharpening and noise reduction options here. My own recommendations may not match yours or those of others. The "Settings" menu has various items that will reset each single panel or all options back the the original defaults if you ever change something and want to return back to the starting point.Īs you can see from responses in this thread already people's preferences vary, sometimes widely. The default settings are basically my own "Iridient" recommended starting point and I these initial options work well for many people without any modifications at all. ![]() ![]() Either I am too lazy, not clever enough or just overwhelmed.but would somebody be kind enough to share Iridient X-Transformer settings with me (I think they're save-able to a preset) or point me towards someplace explaining me stuff like I am five years old? My Google seems tired too. ![]()
